5 Steps to an Easy Football Party

Posted by Meaghan Barry on January 27, 2015

I’ve been so busy thinking about this historical blizzard that is currently hitting us that I have barely put a thought to this weekend’s big football game!  I’m pretty excited to cheer on the New England Patriots to (hopefully) another big win.  I have a feeling that most of our readers will be cheering on the Seahawks, but we all can agree on what makes this game so special- the food!  Are you hosting a big football game viewing party this weekend?  Evite and Qdoba have teamed up to provide a great article with 5 Steps to an Easy Football Party.

catering-taco-bar

My favorite tip from this article is #3- ordering a catered meal from a restaurant.  While I love to cook, I love to be able to have time to watch the game and hang out with my guests.  For parties, I love to have the party catered and then I can focus on making one or two of my own favorite appetizers or desserts.  Qdoba offers a variety of catering options, including their nacho, taco, and burrito bars…my mouth is watering just thinking about it!  Then, save yourself even more time by using Evite to send special watch the game invitations.

Once you figure out the main meal for your football party, you can have fun deciding what appetizer and dessert you can make for your party.  Here are some of our favorite game day recipes from the 2 Sisters 2 Cities archives:

Tex-Mex Pimiento Cheese Dip– This recipe always make an appearance on my Super Bowl menu.  This might be true for you too after you try it!

Mexican Pinwheels

Mexican Pinwheels– This super easy appetizer recipe has been pinned over 6,000 times on Pinterest!

Chips and Spinach Dip

Spinach Artichoke Dip– Better than any restaurant spinach artichoke dip- trust me on this one.  It’s so good.

Slice of Peanut Butter Cream Pie

Peanut Butter Cream Pie– Don’t plan on leftovers with this recipe- your guests will love it!

Boxed-Cake-Mix-Chocolate-Chip-Cookies_thumb.jpg

Boxed Cake Mix Chocolate Chip Cookies– These cookies are so easy to make and always come out deliciously puffy and moist.

Delicious-Salted-Caramel-Brownies-_thumb.jpg

Salted Caramel Brownies– I can’t wait to make these this weekend!  I love the perfect combination of chocolate, caramel, and salt.

To all my fellow Northeasterners- start digging (once it’s safe out!) and start planning!  And to everyone else, please send warm wishes our way and have fun planning your game day festivities.

Holiday Coffee Bar and Thanksgiving Recipes

Posted by Meaghan Barry on November 20, 2014

Holiday Coffee Bar 1

Now that we’ve officially wrapped up T’s birthday extravaganza, I’ve finally started thinking about Thanksgiving…which is probably a good idea considering it is next week!  I have a whole section in one of my recipe binders reserved just for Thanksgiving recipes.  I’m also always adding to my Thanksgiving Pinterest board for hosting inspiration.

Thanksgiving Coffee Bar

Over the past few years, I have hosted Thanksgiving at our home and I am always looking for fun new ideas and recipes for the big day.  This year I have decided to do a full coffee bar set-up so that my guests can have coffee and their favorite International Delight Creamers before, during, or after their Thanksgiving dinner.  I was able to find four of the I.D. holiday flavors at Target today.  It’s going to be a very hard decision to pick which one to try first- Gingerbread Latte, Sugar Cookie, Peppermint Chocolate Truffle, or Pumpkin Pie Spice?!  To set up your holiday coffee bar, just add freshly brewed coffee, coffee cups, your favorite International Delight Creamers, a couple of spoons to stir things up, and a few decorative Thanksgiving pieces.

Coffee Bar ID

A few coffee bar tips- You may want to throw your International Delight on ice if you plan to have it out for a few hours so it’s stays cold and fresh!  If you are stocking up on International Delight for your Thanksgiving guests, be sure to sign up for their Member Delights program to get a free instant coupon towards I.D.  Also, you can create an easy and cheap table decor piece by searching Pinterest for free Thanksgiving printables.  There is a lot of great stuff out there…just print and frame once you find something that catches your eye!  If you have a single-serve coffee maker (such as a Keurig,) you could also set that up on your coffee bar with your favorite K-cup selection so that your guests can make their own cups of hot coffee as needed.

International Delight Coffee Bar

I’ve also started picking some of my favorite Thanksgiving recipes from the 2S2C archives to make for next week.  Here’s my current list so far:

rosemary parmesan popcorn

  • Rosemary Parmesan Popcorn (for a light snack/appetizer before the big dinner)

Chorizo Cornbread Stuffing

  • Chorizo Cornbread Stuffing

Sweet-PotatoYam-Casserole-_thumb.jpg

  • Sweet Potato Casserole

Sweet-Refrigerator-Rolls_thumb.jpg

  • Grandma’s Sweet Refrigerator Rolls

Apple-Sauce_thumb.jpg

  • Homemade Apple Sauce

Make-Ahead Turkey Gravy {from 2 Sisters 2 Cities}

Do you host Thanksgiving each year or do you usually travel to family or friends?  What’s your favorite go-to Thanksgiving entertainment idea and/or recipe?

Summer Party Ideas

Posted by 2 Sisters 2 Cities on July 8, 2012

Fourth of July Party Buffet

We are fully in the midst of summer and I wanted to share some fun summer party ideas!  The theme for my party was actually a red, white, and blue Fourth of July party, but a lot of these ideas could be customized and used at any summer party.

At my family’s annual reunion, each year we have a wiffle ball tournament.  For those of you that don’t know what wiffle ball is, it is similar to baseball/softball except played with a plastic ball and bat.  You probably have seen them at the grocery store or Target/Wal-Mart during the summer.

My family is extremely competitive and the winners of the annual wiffle ball tournament get bragging rights all year.   A few years ago, we started hosting the wiffle ball tournament at my parent’s house because of their large back yard and proximity to where everyone is staying. After the wiffle ball game, we then have a lunch for everyone.

This year, my mom and I started thinking about summer party ideas weeks before the lunch.  We wanted dishes we could make ahead of time and pull together easily after the game.  Some of the desserts are repeats of recipes I have posted about, but the rest of the recipes are new and I will post more details about them through out the week.

Our Summer Party Menu:

Lunch
Mediterranean Dip with Pita Chips
Tex-Mex Pimiento Cheese Dip with Red, White and Blue Tortilla Chips
Mixed Greens Salad with Strawberries, Grilled Chicken and Poppy Seed Dressing
Sliders with Cheddar, Colby Cheese or Plain
Baked Beans
Kielbasa with Caraway-Root Beer Sauce
Kettle Chips
Lemonade, Ice Tea, and Water

Vanilla Cupcakes with Buttercream Frosting
Sea Salt Caramel Brownies
White Trash Party Mix
Party Favors:
Sugar Cookies

Summer Party Decorations

I was inspired by Pinterest to make decorations for the party with a Red, White, and Blue theme since it was Fourth of July weekend. Earlier this weekend, I posted about the Pennant Banner that I made for the party.  I hand-folded the stars in the background by following this post at The Gunny Sack.

For the flowers we bought red carnations and white filler flowers, and then cut lavender from my mom’s garden.  We placed them in mason jars and tied red, white, and blue ribbon around the jars.  Then we placed the jars in a red 2-tied basket.

For the napkins and silverware, I wrapped the plastic silverware in a white napkin and then wrapped a red or blue star napkin folded in half around the bundle and tied with the opposite color ribbon.  I found two small red and blue baskets at Jo Ann’s Fabrics that I placed all the bundled silverware in and topped off with flags in the sides of both displays.

Here is a close-up of the flowers:

Outside we had two tables, chairs and a tent.  I made confetti for the tables using a paper punch and some leftover red, white, and blue paper.  It was a very windy day so we used  tablecloth clips to hold down the tablecloth and taped down the confetti.
Outside Tables
Simple, yet beautiful center pieces we made for the outside tables.  We had to wait to bring these out to the tables because of the wind.

We had mason jars with ribbon tied around the rims and colorful patriotic themed paper straws all ready for my family to use as their drink glasses.  The paper straws are from this cute store called Shop Sweet Lulu.  I made homemade labels for all the food and drinks, which I will be posting about later in the week to explain how to make your own.

After is came out of the oven, it was gone after a few minutes.  Please don’t worry though- I have made it twice since because I wanted to get good photos of it cooked.  The sacrifices that I make for our loyal 2S2C readers!  Kidding-  this dip is seriously amazing, I really have made it twice since, but it was by no means a sacrifice.  Yum!!Pimiento Cheese Dip
Delicious Baked Beans, and yes, that is bacon on the top.
Baked Beans
Sliders with your choice of cheeses or no cheese.  I have decided that a slider is the perfect size burger for me.  I was so full after one (and all that pimiento cheese dip Smile.)
Sliders Close-up
We had these really cute squeeze bottles filled with ketchup, mustard and mayonnaise and a bowl of dill pickle chips for the sliders.
Sliders
Mixed greens salad topped with Strawberries, candied almonds, grilled chicken and poppy-seed dressing.   This is one of my favorite summer salads.

A tower of my classic vanilla cupcakes and buttercream frosting.

The cupcake liners are also from Shop Sweet Lulu.  Love them!  They really inspired me to keep the cupcakes simple with white frosting and flag toppers.

These Sea Salt Caramel Brownies were heaven!  I am dreaming about them now.

The White Trash Party Mix placed in small polka dot red and blue paper cups, which we also bought at Shop Sweet Lulu.   I added patriotic sprinkles to this batch of white trash and I was so happy with the results.

Last, but not least, the sugar cookie party favors were given to everyone as they left.
Sugar Cookie Favors
This party was a lot of fun to pull together with my mom and sisters.   I know that Fourth of July has already passed, but many of these ideas can be translated into Summer cookouts or summer birthday parties.  I can’t wait to share more details about the recipes and craft ideas from this party with you for the next week or two.   Stay tuned!

Pig + Sangria = Backyard Pig Roast

Posted by 2 Sisters 2 Cities on May 14, 2012

We have been working on our backyard for several weekends in a row to get it ready for summer and for a pig roast we hosted this past weekend.  It had rained for much of last week, but we lucked out with beautiful weather on Saturday.  My husband has wanted to do a pig roast for years, but the logistics in our city condo just didn’t work out.  Now that we have moved out to the ‘burbs, we have a pretty good set-up in our backyard for it.  After pricing out a few “pig-roasters” in the Boston area, we hired Big Pig Barbecue & Catering.

An hour or so before the event began, a big van pulled up with a large grill in tow and this slogan stamped on the side:

If you grill it, they will come!

The guys did a great job of setting up the large grill and banquet tables while we continued to prepare for the party.  Little Sister M was visiting us for a few days and she was really helpful with watching Baby T and helping us set up everything.  She also made all the cute blue and green signs in the pictures below.

I bought a few outdoor party decorations at Home Goods…they had a great selection of table runners, table clothes, galvanized buckets, outdoor pillows, cocktail napkins, and citronella candles.  I tried to stick to a blue and green theme.  My husband also bought me some Mother’s Day flowers a day early so they served double duty as party decor and my present.

When guests arrived, the kids played in the backyard with some toys I had set-up (balls, pool noodles, bubbles, etc).  One of our guests brought a bouncy house that they owned, which was a huge hit with all the kids.  I put out juice boxes on ice for the kids using K’s duck she used for her hurricane party (that duck sure does get around!):

We had the Big Pig guys serve the food about an hour after guests arrived and it was all ready to go after a small presentation of the pig (which my husband loved):

I had hoped the roasted pig would be delicious, but I was blown away by all food – the baked beans, pasta salad, coleslaw, cornbread, and of course, the pork were all amazing.  I didn’t get a chance to try the barbecue chicken on the day of the party, but I had some leftovers of it yesterday and it was also extremely tasty.  I was able to freeze some of the leftover pork from our little piggie so we can continue to enjoy the meat a few more times.

Since most of the food was already being taken care of by the Big Pig guys, I wanted to just make a few small things for the party.  I decided to make a signature cocktail and chocolate chip cookies for dessert.  The weather was pretty warm out so I decided to make a red wine sangria for the event’s signature cocktail.  I searched for a quite a few recipes to find one that was similar to an authentic Spanish sangria and adapted it to make this recipe:

Print
Red Wine Sangria
Author: m
Recipe type: Cocktail
Prep time:  15 mins
Total time:  15 mins
Serves: 15

A great warm-weather drink
Ingredients
  • 5 large juice oranges, washed; three oranges sliced; remaining oranges juiced
  • 3 large lemons, washed and sliced
  • 1 cup granulated white sugar
  • 1 cup Triple Sec
  • 4 (750 ml.) bottles of Spanish red wine, chilled (I used a rioja with tempranillo grapes)
Instructions
  1. Start to prepare the sangria 2-8 hours before serving so the flavors begin to meld together.
  2. Divided evenly, add sliced orange and lemon slices and and sugar to two large pitchers. Use a wooden spoon to mash the fruit slices and sugar for about 1 minute. Stir in orange juice from juiced oranges, Triple Sec, and wine (again, divided evenly between the two pitchers). Refrigerate until ready to serve.
  3. Add some ice cubes and stir to redistribute fruit before serving.
