Fresh Produce Tuesday- Corn Recipes

Posted by 2 Sisters 2 Cities on August 21, 2012

One of my favorite summer memories from growing up is sitting on our back deck shucking bags of corn.  We have finally started to get corn in our CSA and I have been looking for different ways to serve it up.  The standard in our house is of course good old corn on the cob, but there are many other types of corn recipes out there.

Fresh Produce Tuesday: Beet Recipes

Posted by 2 Sisters 2 Cities on August 14, 2012

I can’t really say that I love beets, but we get them in our CSA about every other week so I am learning to embrace them.  I was able to find lots of beet recipes this week that I would like to try with our next batch of beets.  One recipe I did make a few weeks ago that I loved was beet chips (recipe below.)  I received a food processor as a wedding gift and never took out all the attachments to see what they did.  Turns out, it has an awesome mandoline attachment that thinly slices things up in less than a second.  Did I mention it is our five year wedding anniversary this week?  I could have used this so many times over the last five years!  Lesson learned- always read your small appliance manuals so you learn about all the extra functionality they might have.

BEET RECIPES FROM AROUND THE WEB:

  • Baked Golden and Red Beets with Anise Vinaigrette from food & style
  • Beet and Apple Salad from Katie Brown
  • Beet Chips from Martha Stewart Everyday Food, January 2010

Fresh Produce Tuesday: Zucchini Recipes

Posted by 2 Sisters 2 Cities on July 24, 2012

Zucchini is one summer vegetable that I love in the beginning of the season and start to dread by the end.  I usually end up brushing the zucchini with a little olive oil, sprinkling it with a little S&P, and throwing it on the side of the grill to enjoy with whatever else we’re having.  However, after pulling together this zucchini recipe compilation, I’m definitely looking forward to trying a few new ways of cooking up zucchini. So whether you are trying to use up a bumper crop of zucchini from your own garden or some you picked up at an urban farmers market, here are some new zucchini recipes to try.

ZUCCHINI RECIPES FROM AROUND THE WEB:

  • Cheesy Zucchini Rice from Pink Parsley
  • Fried Zucchini from Giada DeLaurentiis

Fresh Produce Tuesday: Raspberry Recipes

10+ Raspberry Recipe Ideas

With all of the fresh raspberries available at local farmers markets, I wanted to feature a number of raspberry recipes this week.  Raspberries are one of baby T’s favorite foods as evidenced in this photo below.  I can’t believe how quickly they disappear from his high chair tray sometimes!  Our new house has some wild raspberry bushes around the perimeter, but I have only been able to pick a few at a time…our critter friends get the rest.

No raspberries in our CSA this weekend, but lot’s of other goodies!  Here’s my weekly Instagram photo of our pick-up:

Raspberry Recipes from Around the Web:

One of my favorite desserts to make is this Chocolate-Rasberry Tart from Martha Stewart Everyday Food, May 2010.  It’s really easy to pull together and the raspberry chocolate combination is perfect!

Fresh Produce Tuesday – Swiss Chard Recipes

Posted by 2 Sisters 2 Cities on July 10, 2012

Swiss Chard Recipes

Fresh Produce Tuesday is finally back this week with some great swiss chard recipes!  I apologize for the 2 week hiatus, but I needed a little blogging break and am now feeling quite reinvigorated.  My local CSA had it’s first pick-up last Saturday…I was so excited to pick it up.  Here’s an instagram I took of my first bounty (on a side note, you can follow us on Instagram under the username 2sisters2cities!)

There was no swiss chard in this week’s pick-up, but there was some Red Russian kale, a variety that I had never tried before.  I actually took the above photo of the swiss chard a few weeks ago.  I used it to make a simple recipe of penne pasta, italian sausage, swiss chard, and grated Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese.  Here are 10 more swiss chard recipes I have found that look really good:

Swiss Chard Recipes from Around the Web:

  • Gemelli with Sausage, Swiss Chard, and Pine Nuts from Martha Stewart Everyday Food March/April 2003
  • Herb, Chard, and Feta Soup from Bon Appetit
  • Sauteed Swiss Chard with Bacon from Anne Burrell

Fresh Produce Tuesday- Week #13: Carrot Recipes

Posted by 2 Sisters 2 Cities on June 19, 2012

I thought this week might be challenging to find a lot of different carrot recipes, but I definitely underestimated how many ways one can eat carrots.  Although carrots can be found year-round in supermarkets, it’s always interesting to try out the various varieties and colors of carrots available from local farms.  If you open yet another CSA box full of carrots and think “les carottes sont cuites” (translation: the carrots are cooked, meaning: you’re done for), here are 10 carrot recipes to get culinary inspiration.

Carrot Recipes from Around the Web:

  • Carrot and Yogurt Sauce from The Bon Appetit Test Kitchen
  • Carrot Cake Cupcakes with Maple-Cream Cheese Frosting from smitten kitchen
  • Carrot Juice Recipes from All About Juicing

Kale is a vegetable that I have come to embrace in the summer over the past few years.  It’s extremely nutritious and a great addition to so many recipes.  I love to steam or sauté some up and add it to pasta dishes, but I’m really looking forward to making kale chips later this week!  Here are 10 kale recipes that sound amazing:

Fresh Produce Tuesday- Week #11: Strawberry Recipes

Posted by 2 Sisters 2 Cities on June 5, 2012

For this week’s Fresh Produce Tuesday series, we are featuring  many amazing strawberry recipes.  Strawberries are my all-time favorite fruit.  I enjoy them almost year-round, but the most delicious ones are the fresh, local strawberries found every June from local farms.  I love that strawberries are so versatile- I enjoy them in a smoothie or with Greek yogurt in the morning, with a spinach salad for dinner,  in a sweet dessert, or I just pop them in my mouth just as they are.

I’ve been noticing fresh spring produce is abundant lately at the farmer’s markets.  Here are  recipe ideas for Asparagus, Artichokes, Spring Onions, Peas, Garlic Scapes & Spring Garlic, Rhubarb, Fava Beans, Radishes, Lettuce, and Morels in case you missed any of the previous weeks of our series.

I made this strawberry shortcake recipe a few weeks ago and loved how it turned out.  I was a little shocked how much heavy cream was used in the shortcake base alone, but it created a perfectly tasting cake to douse with strawberries and whipped cream.

Here are 9 additional strawberry recipes that I love:

  • Fresh Strawberry Pie from Brown Eyed Baker
  • Homemade Strawberry Lemonade from My Baking Addiction
  • Strawberry Balsamic Thyme Freezer Jam from Foodie with Family
  • Strawberry Cupcakes with Strawberry Buttercream from Martha Stewart Living, February 2009
  • Strawberry Frozen Yogurt from Pink Parsley
  • Strawberry, Pistachio, and Goat Cheese Pizza from Cooking Light, May 2009
  • Strawberry Spinach Salad from Our Best Bites
  • Strawberry Shortcake Popsicles from Baker’s Royale
  • Strawberry Wine Coolers from Annie’s Eats

Here’s your chance to link up you favorite strawberry recipe.   It would be great if you could link back to 2 Sisters 2 Cities or add our button to your strawberry  post (our button can be found on the top of the right-hand column), but it is not required.  Readers, please “like” the recipes below that you like the best!

Here is the Fresh Produce Tuesday schedule for the next few weeks:

Week #12- June 12th: Kale
Week #13- June 19th: Carrots
Week #14- June 26th:  Chard
